Your Watercolor Painting Lesson is "Using Color's Temperature to Enhance White"

Step#1-Surfaces Facing the Sky

Onto cold pressed water color paper, sketch a poppy.Paint a very pale wash of 'new gamboge' on the vertical surfaces that receive direct light. Paint heavier at the tips of the petals to give shape.

Step # 2- Surfaces Reflecting the Sky

Paint flat areas that reflect the sky, or the petals that turn away from the light, with a pale wash of 'cobalt blue'. The petal in front faces the sun on it's top edge and then turns under to receive the 'cooler' color of other sky reflecting surfaces. The heart of the flower is given a darker color.

Step#3-Shadows Casted

Mix a mid value of 'cobalt and a bit of Winsor blue' to paint the shapes that have shadows from the light. Be sure to use enough paint to cover the 'entire' area of the shadow. Then, while still wet,use a 'dab' or 'charge' a bit of 'new gamboge and rose madder into the shadow. Let the 'mixed' color seek its own place. Paint center a heavier mix of 'new gamboge & rose madder' and shadow it with a deep highlight.

 Step#4-Final Darks and Details

The petals have wrinkles that are brought out by using a mid value of 'cobalt blue'. The same can be done for 'shapes' within shadowed areas. Then darken the areas of the 'cast shadows. The last item is the deepest center of the flower, use a deep tone for that edge.

 That's Charging! Good Work!
