  Oil Painter and Teacher

Your Oil Painting Lesson is "Flower Blossoms"

Step#1-Mass, Mass, Mass...

Block in basic shape of blossom to be painted using Alizarin Crimson in it's full strength to create initial dark. Then lightened gradually with white. When light and dark meet, mix them together at the edges. Light gray is then introduced around outside edges and then blended

 Step # 2- Design

Thought is now given to design of the composition of the painting. A second & third flower are introduced. Then leaf color, a dark value is painted in. Darks are essential as light tones or values cannot be expressed without the darks.

Step#3-Background

If entire canvas was painted first with a suitable background color, be sure to leave the area the blossom will occupy unpainted and then allow it to dry. If background is added as painting progresses, then use blue and yellow to achieve various hues for leaves.

 Step#2-Details and Hi-Lites

Now you have fun! Tip the petal's edges with lighter white. In the well lit petal area, tip with a warm white tone, and in the shadow area of the petal, tip with a cool darker tone. It is important to maintain the value of tips (light or dark), lower or darker in the shadows, and higher or lighter in the sunlight. Add final dark leaf and stem details to finish painting.

 Fine work!! And keep Practicing.
