Your Private Art Lesson with...

  Illustrator & Teacher

Your Drawing Lesson is "Values in Pencil"

Step#1- The First Line

The initial barn drawing is done with a 4H pencil. Include only important lines of the barn. Do not draw every board, stone, etc. Concern yourself with the proper proportions, placement of subjects on the paper, and the perspective.

 Step#2- The First Value

The first value established is the darkest tone and the lightest is the white of the paper. Therefore, the middle values are the ones to be determined in the next step. Use 6B for darkest and work your way to lightest using a 6H. The range is: Darkest 6B,4B,2B,HB,2H,4H, 6H lightest.

Step#3- Building The Drawing

Once the darks are done, put in all the middle tone areas. The boards of the barn are drawn with a 2H in vertical strokes and vary for interest. The stones, fence and grass are added with a 4H. Darken the shadow from the overhang on the front of the barn with an HB. Do not add a detail until you are sure of the values of your areas.

Step#3- Finishing With Character In The Drawing

Use an HB for board details and eliminate some boards (2B) to give interest. Use a 6H for the roof details, the hills, trees in the distance, and the grass details in the foreground. Remember to keep strokes short and vary length and direction. Also keeping white backgrounds as a silhouette or negative space. Do not outline objects.
