IN THE DAY HEALTH CENTER
The Day Health center is an adult medical day program for
persons with Alzheimer's Disease and other related dementias. Dr. Miriam
Aronson, vice president for geriatric services, stated that the program
provides two separate specialties: one for early stage persons; and, one
for those in the more advanced stages of the illness. A unique feature of
the Center is that we have a distinct program for individuals at the early
stage of their illness.
The Director of the Center, Jane Hall, states that participants
have enjoyed looking at art works of the 'great masters'. The early stage
group has taken trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern
Art and other local art exhibits.
The Director of the Art Project is Susan Peterson, the
Recreation Therapist for this special group. Members paint their favorite
works of art at the Day Health center. The works consist of paintings based
on art works by Renoir, Monet, Cezanne, Van Gogh, O'Keefe, Cassat, and other
subjects. The distinct difference is that we paint as groups. The early
stage group worked on the more detailed pieces such as the figures and foreground,
while the later stage group worked on the less detailed background. Thus
the effect of a pieced or collage presentation. The works are carried out
in bold primary colors.
Themes of the paintings are worked on throughout the days
of art therapy for continuity and memory stimulation. Members have enjoyed
seeing the attractive and familiar finished products. They feel a sense
of pride and dignity when they see what they have created.
