Jammin' in Jamaica

Memories of

Jamaica

By: Rachel Lieberman

"Rachel, we're going to Jamaica!" my dad screamed. My parents, my brother, my aunt, uncle and their baby, my Grandma and Grandpa all came.

The Beaches Hotel was pretty. We were all the way at the top of the third floor of the hotel. from our bedroom terrace we could see the ocean and the sun shining. We saw the people that were para-sailing, and we could see the pool and the bar.

I love that bar! You could have whatever you wanted. I could order any soda or Shirley Temple drink. There was also a popcorn machine next to the bar.

Steve, the Fun Pal was funny. On the Pirates Party day, Steve came over to us. My Grandpa said, "You are a gay pirate!" because Steve said, "Come here" with open arms like he was going to hug all the guys.

Most of us had fun at the Pirates Party. I was screaming songs into the microphone. The had good food and the DJ played good songs.

We did Crab Racing. First you pick a colored crab at the front desk, and then you pay to enter the race. If you win, you get your money back. In the beginning of the race the crabs are let out of a bucket, then you watch the race and whichever crab gets out of the chalk circle first wins. There was a crab race every night. We won a few times.

One day there was a sand sculpture contest and we made a Mickey Mouse sand sculpture that won 2nd place prize. I mad the bow by myself, and I also helped with everything else.

I loved the ocean except when my Dad was asking me if I wanted to go water skiing, I told that I was afraid of the barracudas. This was because when we went banana boating, a kid said, " I saw a barracuda and it almost bit my leg." I didn't tell my dad that I was afraid of the barracudas. In fact, I don't even know what they look like. My dad made me go in the freezing water. It was a nightmare! He wanted me to go water skiing but they didn't have the right sized skis. So the guy said, "Why don't you let her try kneel boarding?" I went to my instructor for kneel boarding lessons. It was so early in the morning that the ocean was freezing but I went kneel boarding and there were a lot of bumpy waves. I liked bouncing on the waves.

Something terrible happened! We had to leave Jamaica. We had to go home to the freezing cold in New Jersey. It was a horrible feeling that I was leaving Jamaica.

Before we left, my dad forgot the passports to go back to America. I loved that mistake, but my mom found them and then she lost them again. Then she called me on the walkie-talkie to come upstairs. So, I went up and down the stairs and I brought them to dad. But they were the wrong passports. They were my aunt, uncle's and cousin's passports. Then we traded passports with them so we could go back home. I felt awful.

When I got home I still had my Jamaican braided hair and y rastar hat. Everybody asked me, "Where did you go?" I practically go sick of people asking and me telling them. The boys called me Latrell Spreewell, a basketball player, because he braid his hair also.

I love Jamaica and I miss Jamaica.
