ARTISTS STATEMENT |
IRWIN GOLDMAN |
Having spent my entire life in the New York area, but raveling periodically to the Midwest.
I became aware of the openness of the countryside.
Countless miles of flatness, disturbed on occasion only by a 'cluster' of trees, made me aware of what is now one of
the important features of most of my paintings
My awareness of the 'line' was further enhanced when I lived in the Hamptons for many years, enjoying miles of sand, water and sky.
Now, it's the first thing I seek when I start painting and everything develops from there.
touch and feel are also extremely important.
I believe in the liberal use of my knife to define textures,
varying from rocks to pilings to a softer touch, as in leaves-
I am fascinated, trying to create three- dimensional looks in a two- dimensional media.
Although I consider myself a realist, depending on my subject in a particular painting,
I tend towards minimalist realism...If I can convey my message in two strokes...why use four?
In that respect, I suppose I am a poet/ painter much as some of the early 1900 painters.
Since my early childhood, I have always felt a strong desire to convey my feelings...
first to paper, and then canvas. But I still love the emotion of drawing
and the commitment to be made with pen to paper.
