Artist's Statement

Working in the mixed media of collage allows for a great deal of exploration. Each layer builds upon the pre-existing one and has an ever changing rhythm. At first one views the total composition, then the eye begins to pick up the details...dots, lines, torn edges, and subtle color changes. Like music is to the ear, poetry to the mind, art is to the eye. All converse with the part of us that is our essence.

Naomi Kahan, a graduate of Cooper Union School of Art has spent most of her life as a creative person, first as a commercial artist, painter and now working in collage. The oriental use of paper has been her inspiration. Although originally she was impressed by it's simplicity and reserve, over the years her own work has become more complex and less reserved. she combines the use of paper with paint, pastel, crayon, thread, string, and whatever else will enhance her work. Ms. Kahan notes, "The constant challenge is to take common material and attempt to create something of uncommon quality."

She is a member of Salute to Women in the Arts, the Painting Affiliates of Northern NJ and the National Organization of Woman Artists. Over the years she as exhibited in museums, galleries and corporate spaces in New York and New Jersey.
