 GENESIS IN MOSAICS

 BAR LEVY

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

As a boy, Bar's father would take him hiking in the mountains near his home in Scranton, PA.. He always remembers the discussions they had about ART. He learned that art was the communication of ideas and ideals, real and imagined, and the format could be words (written or spoken), drawings, paintings, sculptures, music, etc.

Bar spent his life as an artist. In high school, college, in dental school and as a teacher and research scientist, his format was the written and/or spoken word.

While teaching and doing research at Columbia University in the 50's, he studied wood carving (bas relief) with Professor Detweiler, Professor of Anatomy. Later, while a professor at the University of Texas at Houston, he taught himself to communicate in stained glass, which resulted in twelve 4' X 4' windows depicting the symbols of the twelve tribes of Israel which were installed in a temple in Houston.

When he retired from teaching and research at the University of Texas in Houston, he went to Mexico City to teach at the National University (UNAM). During his 5 years there, he studied art at the Tasco Branch of UNAM.

Since retiring from research and teaching, he has continued to communicate ideas, using Mosaics as his principal media, resulting in this exhibition.
