Artist's Statement

I am interested in humankind and the human condition. I am a product of my time and environment. I am a figurative painter.

In my work I strive to analyze, mold, fight and assimilate both what I have observed and what I wish to present. While I am a student of humanity, I try to include my own take on the people and situations that inspire me to paint. My paintings are realistic with an edge. I bend or even change reality in order to make statements in so many colors and brushstrokes. While I am a witness and recorder of various physical and emotional conditions, I am also an interpreter.

In other words, I make statements and pose questions in order to engage the viewer. The subject matter may often seem familiar since it is always base on observed physical reality. My intention, however, is that, through that recognition, ideas, personal histories and memories or thoughts will be come part of the text of the image. Color, form, composition and technique are the tools that I employ to either emphasize or detract from specific themes.

The satisfaction of working in this manner is multifaceted. It allows me to reach and touch my audience. It requires me to keenly observe and to engage in serious analysis and introspection. It is important to be visually and mentally aware. The challenge is translating this into a painting. The reward is when the statement is complete, although this is never really possible.

I believe that when I am successful, who I am is apparent. These recordings are about what I have seen, where I have been, my particular epoch. My ideas, hopes and beliefs are written in the text of the painting as clearly or as subtly as they would appear in a novel. These frozen picture frames are my novels about my time.
