GRAND CANYON-- In it's vastness, the canyon seems a metaphor for all that is grand and incomprehensible to humans. #15 |
GRAND CANYON-- The canyon is so overwhelming, one has to turn away from time to time. It is too big! #14 |
GRAND CANYON-- Many visitors descend to the floor of the canyon and now park officials have limited overuse. #16 |
CANYON de CHELLY-- A phenomenon called 'streaking' occurs from mineral and chemical deposits eroded by rainwater over the centuries. #18 |
CANYON de CHELLY--The ageless landscape is woven with ancient trails that wander among huge stone monolilths. #19 |
CANYON de CHELLY-- In dry seasons, the empty streabed serves as a roadway, but a sudden cloudburst can turn it into a raging torrent. #20 |
CALIFORNIA COAST-- Trees that resist the inexorable forces of the coastal weather stand like determined druids or wooden wizards against the wind. #26 |
MESA VERDE--Crouching at the bottom of open caves, the uninhabited cliff houses have stood for over 600 years. Perhaps as many as 150 people lived in the 114 rooms. #5 |
MONUMENT VALLEY-- Oceans and geological upheavels over the past billion years laid down the sands and silt that became stone and that exposure to wind and weather has turned into the 'monuments' of the valley. #6 |
MONUMENT VALLEY-- Many old and historic native structures have been preserved: these roof struts, burnished by the sun and winds, glows in the desert light. #9 |
MONUMENT VALLEY-- Other formations are the lava-hard remnants of volcanic activity, eventually the forces of nature will wear them away. #7 |
ACOMA-- Once several thousand people lived on the mesa. Few current residents enjoy the endless skies and deep horizons, as the climate is very extreme. #13 |
ACOMA-- Adobe walls look and feel as though they are there to hold back the sky as well as the earth. The Spanish named the pueblo for a lake that has since dried up and disappeared. #12 |
SENORA DESERT-- Plants have evolved techniques to survive long periods of drought. Then when the rains briefly come, there is flowering for a short beautiful life, and then gone when the moisture disappears. #25 |
SENORA DESERT-- Everything gets put to use in the desert, and dead trees and plants are used for building materials and fuel for fires. #23 |
SENORA DESERT-- The colors of the desert glow on a totem pole garden ornament, spreading it's wings as if to protect natives from rattlesnakes, tarantula spiders and poisonous Gila lizards that live in the desert. #24 |
