Artist's Statement

A Pastel View

July 2001

For more than thirty years, I have been a photographer, specializing in the interplay of light and dark on an image. Most of my work has been in black and white format which I feel can convey the many moods of light. My photographic work has been exhibited in one man and group shows.

At the same time I was very absorbed in wildlife and nature photography and have doing this professionally for over 25 years. As this part of my work was in color, I gradually became involved in the varied aspects of color and took art courses which led to an interest in the medium of pastel. This medium gave me new ways of creating different atmospheres in a picture by the use of color schemes, and by observing how light will interact with these colors, whether it be a dark, somber feeling or a bright, happy mood.

My subject matter can vary from moody pictorials to nature and wildlife subjects. When I am drawing an animal I try to portray it's own personality, and, yes, it's may moods. Animals can display many human expressions by using their ears, eyes, mouths, and body postures. I am especially attracted to cats, big or small. Mostly, it is because of their facial expressions. My cat looks directly at me when she is annoyed or wants food. Normally, this could be interpreted as an act of aggression, but not for this cat.

I try to convey a feeling and a mood that I receive from looking at a subject. By combining the interplay of light and various pastel colors, I project this expression on to paper. For example, I use colored paper as an under painting and use primary, secondary, and intermediate colors to control the mood of an image.

I have always been interested in the beauty and the starkness of our world, and through my art, I would hope to communicate this feeling to other audiences.
