Brian McCaffrey

An Artistic Statement

The art of Brian McCaffrey concerns existence on the edge of existing. Its origins emanated from a struggle with seemingly intractable problems of being. It concerns the experience of the inter-existence of reality and nightmare...of matter and spirit.

Brian moved to Seattle to seriously begin the formulation of his form. The uplifting ambiance there succeeded in increasing his own inherent inspiration. He was concerned, among other things, in the utilization of a "psychic imagination." Such an entity is the result of an inspiration so high that a total invention is demanded for its expression. In attempting such a complete creation, the imagination tries to destroy the past. The resulting art exhibits the simultaneous appearance of the beatific and the sinister.

Such strivings, of course, involve an immersion into the "essence of life." Thus the central symbol of his art is the rose; the stained glass window on the western wall of a catholic cathedral; Mary, the mother of Christ; the anima; the mother spirit; the mystical center; romantic love; the vision into the inner sanctum of the universe.

The formal expression of such concerns became a "mystically transcendent," ascetically subliminal, world of meta-mythological beings. And these beings are the time spirits who give shape to our cultural surroundings.

Brian conjured his seminal artistic outlook in young adulthood. Fortunately, he grew into a more peaceful state of mind. The paintings on display in this web site are recent and are indicative of a more placid existence that he had a number of years ago. Hopefully, viewers will peruse these images and attempt to find meaning in them that will bring edification into their lives.

Biography

Brian McCaffrey grew up in Weehawken, N.J., directly across the Hudson River from Times Square in New York City. He attended parochial grammar and high schools. He received a degree in Art History from Columbia College, New York, N.Y., and a degree in Building Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic University, Troy, N.Y. After college he worked for years in the field of architecture. He took the various skills and instincts that he picked up from his work in architecture in to his art studio and applied them to his painting. Thus, technically, he terms his art "architectonic painting."
