Nathan Lieberman
(1911 - 1997)
A Retrospective

Nathan Lieberman was a kind man with simple tastes, known to family and friends as "Nat", and to his beloved wife "Beadie" and his children as "Nato".

Born in Ludz, Poland in 1911, he travelled with his mother "Sara" on a steamship to join "David", his father in NY, NY. They lived a modest life, first in Manhattan and later, the Bronx, with his sisters "Rosie and Jeanie" and his adored brother "Moishe". He always said, "No matter what Mom asked of me, I was always a good son and listened".

Then the economic 'Depression ' came which affected him deeply. Nat had tremendous perseverance, working and attending nightschool at City College for 10 years, eventually receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in accounting. At this time he also had taken courses in drafting, which became the foundation of his very detailed approach to art. He also received medals for basketball, track and swimming. A talented pianist, he played with his band "The Social Lions", in the Catskills.

Nathan was a devoted husband and father, working 6 days a week at Academy Hardware in Manhattan. He still found time to help Ronni, Lynn, and Barry, his children, with their homework, as they would gather around the kitchen table while he was eating dinner. He was a skilled craftsman, using his drafting skills to capture and build his plans for extensive built-in desk and wall units and other extensive projects, in his home in New Rochelle, NY.

Nathan was always devoted to his entire family, and along with his wife, Beatrice, hosted many family get-togethers at 72 Stratford Rd. He loved nature, walking outdoors, and dancing. His children remember camp, temple and trips to ice skating rinks, the Bronx Zoo, Rye Beach Playland, and the big trip to Washington, DC.

After many years of working, he retired with Bea to Deerfield Beach, Florida. It was during this time that Beadie's illness progressed. He then devoted many years to caring and nursing for her, until her death in 1984. This exemplified the essence of his kind and tender nature, which he displayed throughout his life. He continued to develop many new close relationships in Florida. It was during this time that Nat started to take formal 'watercolor lessons' and then and over the next few years he produced some the works that are viewed in this retrospective.

Nathan developed a sudden illness in 1997. He lived a good, healthy and physical life, until the age of 86.
