Sara Lieberman
(1890 - 1978)
A Retrospective
Sara, my grandmother, was born in Poland. She emigrated with her first child, Nathan, to the United States in 1912. She joined her much beloved husband David, who had come to New York earlier that year. She and David raised three other children; Rosie, Jeanie and Moishe.
Sara took much pride in her children and her home, keeping the kids in clothes she made, and producing slipcovers for her furniture. She most enjoyed getting together with family, especially when there were eleven grandchildren. It was a treat when Sara and David would bring the famous "Grandma Cake" to family gatherings.
Later, her pride swelled even more when great-grandchildren were added to the family's ranks. Unfortunately, as life goes, David passed on much too early in 1953. Sara adored David and really took his death quite hard. It wasn't until the early 1960's when Sara was influenced to attend the Montifiore Community center, and she met the art counselor, Roger Lawson, that she really found her expression.
She had a wonderful style, that came out in bright primary colors with details of filigree and flurries of details. She would ask, "Tell me what I should paint for you." Then, the next time you would see her she would have painted or modeled something for you.
She passed away in 1978, producing over 150 paintings and 25 or more sculptings.
This recently restored picture of Sara's beloved David is shown as part of this retrospective.
